MAYAN & MARTHA
MAYAN
Earlier in this Blog we reported on the beautiful Alden schooner MAYAN. Now she has a new owner who is undertaking a very nice refit. For those of you who are passionate about schooners in general, and especially Alden schooners, there is a Blogspot site where you can follow the progress. The picture below shows MAYAN out of the water and as you can see she is a shallow draft schooner with a centerboard. Look at those lovely lines! It is not hard to see that she can be very quick on a reach and at the same time very comfortable at sea which are famous John Alden trademark design characteristics.

MARTHA
The past week the equally lovely and long-legged schooner MARTHA visited San Francisco on her way south from Port Townsend. She made a stop in the Bay Areas to race in the Great San Francisco Schooner Race and the Leukemia Cup. Martha was originally built in the Bay Area at W.F. Stone Boat Yard in Alameda in 1907 to a design by the famous and talented B.B. Crowninshield. She is now base in Port Townsend, WA, and owned by the Schooner Martha Foundation. It is a real joy to see that there is a small, but very well cared for, fleet of classic schooners on the West Coast (there is no shortage of them in New England).
