Bow and Stern next
The bow will include the anchor windlass base plate (there will be a dedicated blog entry later on on the custom windlass we are making). The bow section will have the bow thruster tunnel built in and naturally all the chain plates for the bow sprit and the hawse pipes. As the preliminary lines to this Alden design 0347 were intended for a vessel to be built in wood we will be doing something quite unusual to honor that legacy. We will be building a false stem into the bow as if she was built plank on frame. It is a subtle detail and some might argue that it is not “pure” as she is a steel hulled yacht. However, it might also give her that “fast and able” all business look-and-feel that a yacht with fishing schooner heritage ought to have. I hope we will find that balance between a work boat and a yacht that will make her look just right...and very unique with a character all of her own.
As part of production releasing the steel kit for the bow section we had to model the exact routing of the hawse pipes. It is a bit tricky as the windlass design is changing last minute to a full custom windlass modeled after a real manual windlass from a 1920s fishing schooner. In order to figure out the geometries WNA played around with a 3D Rhino model.
The stern section will include the large transom that is at a very shallow angle compared to the bottom part of the aft hull. This is where the Graafship craftsmanship will show.
We will not build the aft keel section showed in the rendering below yet. There are still some design details of the propeller drive train that needs to be finalized so that segment will have to wait until a later batch.

The next two segments to be built are the bow and stern section of the boat. These two sections will include the fore and aft decks when they are plated.
