Lunenburg Tancook Schooners
For those of you who wonder what is going on with the 347 project the answer is “not much at all”. Unfortunately my professional life requires all my time and attention for the time being.
However, in the meantime I can strongly recommend that you check out a spectacular authentic and inspiring project in Lunenburg, Canada. The “Twin schooner project” has a very nice BLOG and the two schooners that are being built are of the Tancook type (Tancook is an island outside Lunenburg). The Tancook type schooner is very closely related to the hull type of 347 (see picture of the two schooner half model on their web site). Some of the later Tancook schooners were possibly influenced by John Alden’s design and vice versa. The first recorded Tancook schooner was built in 1827 by the Baker family.
For those of you who are interested in the evolution and history of the Tancook schooners I can recommend two books: The Tancook Schooners, An island and Its boats, By Wayne M. O’Leary and Schooner Master, A portrait of David Stevens, by Peter Carnahan.

For the first time in decades, there are schooners 'abuilding on the famed waterfront at Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada. Dawson Moreland & Associates are building not just one, but two 48' wooden schooners in the best of Maritime traditions. These 'twins' will be built simultaneously, frame for frame, plank for plank, alongside the historic Lunenburg Dory Shop at 175 Bluenose Drive. Follow their progress from keel laying to launch!
